The Baranof Island Salmon Derby is an annual event sponsored by the Sitka Charter Boat Operators Association (SCBOA) and the Greater Sitka Chamber of Commerce. It is open to all charter boat operators and their clients, and runs from June 1st through August 31st. Russell Greenblatt

Baranof Island Salmon Derby Rules and Regulations

  1. All participants agree to abide by the BISD official rules and Alaska State Department of Fish and Game regulations and that failure to comply will result in automatic disqualification and forfeiture of all prizes.
  2. Any registered participant fishing from an authorized boat may enter a fish caught within 50 nautical miles of Sitka by hook and line and retrieved and brought to net by rod and reel in legal manner.
  3. All participants must officially register prior to fishing and be in possession of his/her registration card at all times and present the card to any official Derby personnel upon request.
  4. Official weigh-in will not take place until participant presents their official registration card to the Weigh Master in charge. The Weigh Master must weigh in all fish entered into the derby between the hours of 2:OO pm - 5:OO pm on the day caught. The fish will be weighed in the round (fish must be bled before weigh-in). Prior to weighing, the Weigh Master will remove a1l baitfish or ice visible in the mouth of any fish. Any fish containing foreign materials (including but not limited to water, ice, and weights) will disqualify that fish from consideration for any prize. Fish weight is determined down to 0.05 lbs.
  5. The Derby runs from 5:30 am of the first day of the month until 5:30 pm of the last day of the month.
  6. Prizes must be accepted as awarded, and have no cash surrender value. No cash prizes will be issued until a signed Alaska State Department of Revenue form 04- 874 is returned to the Derby Rules Committee at P.O. Box 638, Sitka, Alaska 99835.
  7. In the event of a tie, the appropriate prize will be combined with the next subordinate prize(s) and split between the tying participants. If there is no subordinate prize, the appropriate prize will be split between the two tying participants.
  8. The decision of the Derby Rules Committee will be final on all matters.
